What is Planning Web?
Construction has been a primary driver of the Maltese economy over the last half a century, and while it has undoubtedly helped the country’s development, it has also had its negative impacts. From the approval of development projects that jar with their surroundings to months of chaos caused by ongoing works, construction has become a major concern for the Maltese and Gozitan people.
The public’s concern, especially with the impact of construction on their quality of life, has seen several resident and civil society groups take a stand against this unbridled development. Several developments in recent years have seen coalitions formed to oppose them. With the Planning Authority seemingly acting to only rubberstamp development, citizens have been forced to take the initiative to monitor submitted and approved applications themselves.
Planning Web is a project intended to facilitate this process by increasing transparency in the planning process. All of the data presented here is publicly available information that can be obtained from the Planning Authority’s website. While it is readily available, the information can be rather difficult to access, especially if one does not have the permit number for a particular development.
Planning Web allows you to search for the names of the applicants or the architect behind a project, or to select all developments approved in a particular locality. The website can also be used by those who wish to report any construction-related issues they might be experiencing. Reports will be forwarded to the Planning Authority, Building and Construction Agency, and other relevant authorities.
Above all, the data can be used for research purposes for anyone interested in carrying out their own analysis of the situation. The data is for the time being limited to applications approved over the last 12 months though more data will be included in the coming weeks and months.
The platform will also be used as a central depository for planning-related stories and features so make sure you stay tuned for updates.
